One for One
NowYouKnowAbout has one goal: making general knowledge fun for children everywhere. We’d like all children to learn about the famous people we feature in our educational DVDs. So for every DVD you purchase, we’ll give one free to a child supported by one of our charities. Our story
In 2006 an English mother, Clarissa Brooke-Turner, found out that her young children could name every Disney character but didn’t know Van Gogh from Leonardo. She decided to help her children find out about these important people in a fun and engaging way. She knew they wouldn’t necessarily pick up a text book but that they would rather watch than read. After developing these educational films, she realised that her children learnt without even noticing because the information was presented in an entertaining way. Since that moment, NowYouKnowAbout has sold thousands of films that bring these fascinating stories to a young audience in an attractive way.As of March 2010 we have given away 2.000 DVDs for primary school children. We personally visit charities and schools across the UK to hand them out to the children. Before working together with charities, we meet them to see if they share our values. We work, among others, with The Place2Be, who have their own counsellors in over 150 schools across the UK. They select their schools based on the free-school meal plans per school, and we approach those schools with our offer. There are thousands more children who we want to show that learning can be fun. We need your help to do this. For every DVD you purchase today, we give one away.
Why educational DVDs?
Many children in the UK are less likely to be exposed to this valuable layer in their overall learning. Some schools offer general knowledge teaching outside the national curriculum but there are still many schools who lack the resources or time to provide this.In their spare time, children often prefer to do something entertaining over reading text books. Statistics show that children watch an average of 2.5 hours of television per day. Our aim is to turn this screen time into something positive by telling children about famous people from history and stimulating in them an interested and curious mindset.
It is clear that children don’t need expensive educational toys to broaden their knowledge. Almost every home has a TV and a DVD player, By giving children fun and educational stories about heroes from history on DVD, we hope to stimulate creativity, curiousity and inspire them to be a hero too.
